Definition of a “good Jew.”
Here are the 3 qualities that mark a “good Jew.”
1. Visualize a ladder. A good Jew is climbing that ladder. It doesn’t matter how high the person has managed to climb. Sometimes a “good Jew” is on a lower rung then a not so good Jew. What makes him a good Jew? The direction that he is going on the ladder. A good Jew strives to be constantly advancing upward on that ladder. The good Jew does not slip down nor does he even stay on the same rung. He is always moving ahead, even a little at a time. Step by step. Like going up the ramp of the Mizbaiach (Alter of the
Temple
). One step at a time.
2. The good Jew realizes that all Jews are the special children of G-d. “B’nee b’chorie, Yisroel,” the Jews are like my first born child, says Hashem. What pleases a parent the most? When they see someone treating their child with love and kindness. The greatest acts of love that you can show Hashem is to be extra nice to a Jew, who is Hashem’s favorite child. This is the reason for the Mitzvah of Ahavas Yisroel (Love the Jewish people). It is really Ahavas Hashem.
3. Being Hashem’s Chosen People does not make you better then everyone else. It makes you different, not better. In fact, it is a burden, since being special means that Hashem expects more from you. You cannot act as others do. After all, you are special, so live up to what Hashem expects of you.
