LEARNING TORAH

Torah - literally, the "Teaching;" the "Constitution" of Judaism and the Jewish People, given to them by G-d at Mt. Sinai , some thirty three hundred years ago. This belief, that the Ten Commandments, the "Aseret HaDibrot," which are the bare outline, as well as the entire text of the "Five Books of Moses" and their explanation, are of Divine Origin, is known as "Torah min HaShamayim;" literally, the Torah comes from Heaven. It is one of the Fundamental Beliefs of Judaism.

It is a positive commandment to learn Torah and teach it, as it says in Devarim 6:7, "and you shall teach them diligently to your children." The mitzvah to teach Torah to one's children and grand children is learnt from Devarim 4:9: "and you shall make them known to your children and your children's children." The purpose of learning Torah is to enable a person to understand the ways of G-d.

There is no other mitzvah among all the other mitzvot worth as much as Talmud Torah. Talmud Torah is equivalent to all the mitzvot, because learning leads to action. Therefore learning Torah comes before other mitzvot.

YOUR MITZVAH MISSION
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to engage in the learning of Torah. You will accomplish this by finding one of many ways to explore and study the depths of our heritage and law. You can accomplish this by picking up a Torah book and reading it, setting up a set time for learning for a friend, or go to one of the many NCSY learning programs. If you are not sure what to learn or how to start, e-mail us at Lenny@WestCoastNCSY.com. Good luck! This message will self destruct in 5 seconds.
