SAYING THE BERACHA "SHEHAKOL"

NEW! Mitzvah of the Month VIDEO!

Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d,
King of the universe, by Whose
word all things came to be.

"Beracha" - (pl. berachot); a blessing given by one to another: G-d to Man, Man to Man, or Man to G-d. Two basic types within the latter category are "Birchot HaMitzvot," blessings said to G-d basically in gratitude for the privilege of being given a commandment of His to perform; for example, "Blessed are You, O L-rd our G-d, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us to hear the sound of the Shofar," and "Birchot HaNehenin," blessings given by Man to G-d before partaking of one of the wonderful things that Hashem has put into Creation, such as water for which we say the Beracha Shehakol.

We say the Beracha Shehakol on animal products: meat, chicken, fish, and eggs; liquids: drinks and soup; and other groups: mushrooms, candy. We also say Shehakol on foods that we cannot determine the category in which that particular food belongs, or there is an unresolved doubt among the Halachic (Jewish Law) authorities regarding its blessing. If possible, it is desirable to free oneself from the obligation of [reciting a separate blessing over] the food in question by eating it in the midst of a meal that includes bread.

We eat and drink many times throughout the day, often without thinking. This is why saying a blessing is before we eat the food is so important. Saying the blessing Shehakol before a drink makes us take a step back and realize where the drink and ultimately everything came from. It is stated in Psalms 24:1 "The earth and all therein are G-d's," implying that all existence resembles holy property. We are taught that when something is considered “Holy property” we can’t benefit from it unless we redeem it. This is the same with food that God created. We must say a blessing to have access to the drink. We make a blessing thereby making it know that God is in charge of the world and that it is only because of God that I am fortunate to enjoy this Coke. Although it only takes a few seconds the Beracha Shehakol means a lot.

YOUR MITZVAH MISSION
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to say the Beracha Shehakol on all the liquids, meat, candy, soups, etc. that you enjoy this month. Good luck! This message will self destruct in 5 seconds.
